ABOUT THE VAPES
Q: What materials are used in your vaporizers?
A: We use all RoHS compliant, lead-free, non-toxic materials. We only use woods that are sustainably harvested or reclaimed, and we make all our vaporizers by hand right here in the USA. Check out our informational video series on YouTube to see how they work.
Q: Why are vaporizers healthier for me than smoking?
A: Vaporizers release the active ingredients of a plant material via hot air instead of combustion. This works by heating the material to above the temperature at which the natural oils will boil out, but below the temperature at which the plant material itself will burn. The result is nearly-pure active ingredient suspended in vapor which can then be inhaled. The vapor looks similar to smoke but is nowhere near as voluminous, odorous or easy to see. The vaporization process vastly reduces the carcinogens, tar, ash and other unhealthy stuff found in smoke. Convection vaporizers are far superior to the cheap conduction vaporizers on the market and don’t overheat or burn the material.
Q: Does vaporizing conserve material?
A: Yes! Vaporizing is much more economical and efficient than smoking. Combustion burns up and wastes the majority of the active ingredient while vaporizing doesn’t destroy any of it and instead releases it all in a concentrated form you can use. Many people find vaporizing to be 2-3 times as efficient (or more!) so you can save money and material.
Q: How do Underdog vaporizers work?
A: Underdog vaporizers work by convection heat, which means the heat source does not directly touch your material. Rather, the appropriately heated air is inhaled over your material, extracting the active ingredients. First plug in your vape and let it heat up (15-25 min for most vapes), then crumble/grind up a bit of material and inhale it into the short end of a stem against the stainless steel screen. Then mate the stem up with the center tube on the vape (glass and nylon stems will fit loosely) and inhale slowly. Remove the stem from the vape in between hits. Click here for the full instruction sheet, or check out our informational video series on YouTube.
Q: What is the difference between your vape models?
All of our vapes have the same basic function, and perform to the Underdog Standard. Check out our YouTube video on vape model differences. The main difference between individual vapes is the wood type, the design and possibly the core. The "Core" refers to the metal core inside the vape that produces heat. The wood type has a minimal effect on the vape, so we recommend to choose based on your personal aesthetics. There are a handful of woods that are very soft in density, and may suffer heat degradation faster than other, harder woods. If you're concerned about a particular wood type, please feel free to jump to the section on wood types in our YouTube video, or contact us and ask. All current vapes use the same stems as each other, unless otherwise specified.
Standard Core Mk2 (SC2)
The SC2 is the latest evolution of our Standard Core. It combines all the best features of our previous cores, without any of the downsides. A core o-ring is not needed for use with glass stems, but can be added if you like, and will not interfere with any stems. All our stems are compatible with this core.
Standard Core Mk1 (SC1)
Our Standard Core (in process of being replaced by our SC2, see above) is our classic design, and is a variation of our original core. Our Standard Cores currently use an upgraded stainless steel heater cartridge. Older log style vapes used a ceramic resistor. The Standard Core has more mass (more metal) than the Air Core, and so retains heat just a little better, but may take a minute or two longer to heat up. (Overall heat times of either style is 10-20 minutes, or less with a VVPS). Jump to the Standard Core description in our YouTube video.
Our Air Core (now discontinued) was a low mass (less metal) core optimized for stainless steel tipped stems (currently the nylon and NonG stems). The Air Core heats up a minute or two faster than a Standard Core and runs a tad hotter with stainless steel tipped stems. It is possible to use a glass stem (GonG or Direct Draw) with an Air Core, but there is no physical barrier to stop the stem from sliding all the way onto the core before it hits your herb, unless you have an O-Ring installed to give you a positive stop. Check out our YouTube video on how to install a Core O-Ring.
Our production version Air Core has a sleeker build than our prototype Air Core did, and runs with a stainless steel heater cartridge, for even more performance and durability. Jump to the Air Core description in our YouTube video.
Our Econo-Dog (now discontinued) was a budget vape, offered for a limited time. We found a great deal on 17 volt power supplies with an uncommon plug size of 2.5mm, so we decided to make economical vapes with them. The Econo-Dog's core used a production version Air Core, but had a classic ceramic resistor instead of a stainless steel heater cartridge. The Econo-Dog was incompatible with many accessories due to its 17v nature and uncommon 2.5mm sized plug. It also had a tendency for the resistor inside to rattle when handled, due to the unique way it was installed.
Our Mini-Dog is a novelty vape, designed for existing Underdog owners. It is a miniature vape standing at less than a few inches tall, and uses a miniature version of our Air Core with a 3 watt ceramic resistor. Due to the tiny nature of this vape, the heat will quickly degrade the wood, so we advise users to only run it for no more than an hour or so at a time. We only offer this vape to existing 12 volt Underdog owners (and without any power supply or kit) because we do not want anyone to try to use this as their daily driver. The Mini-Dog is a special treat for Underdog owners only. It uses the same 12 volt power supply and stems as a Standard or Air Core vape. Jump to the Mini-Dog description in our YouTube video.
A Lost Dog is a vape that has some sort of cosmetic defect that does not affect its performance and is therefor sold at a lower price. Lost Dogs are a great way to get an Underdog on a budget. Jump to the Lost Dog description in our YouTube video. Due to the accidental nature of these vapes, we cannot predict when we will have them available, but we usually end up with at least one in each refresh.
Sometimes we will make a batch of similar looking vapes, and offer them at a discount. This may take the form of a Vape Special, Vape Air Core Special, Holiday Vape, Birthday Vape or otherwise. We can offer these at a discount since they're made in a batch, are usually a simple cylinder design, and don't need individual pictures or listings. Jump to the Special Vapes description in our YouTube video.
Q: How much electricity do UD Vapes use?
A: Our regular vapes use under 10 watts, which is less electricity than is used by a low power CFL (compact fluorescent lightbulb).
Q: What are all those acronyms?
ABV: Already Been Vaped (Used Material)
DD: Direct Draw Stem
GonG: Glass on Glass
NonG: Nylon on Glass
RoHS: Restriction of the Use of Certain Hazardous Substances in Electrical and Electronic Equipment
SGS: Simple Glass Stem
SS: Silicone Stem
VVPS: Variable Voltage Power Supply
WonG: Wood on Glass (please note we no longer make these)
Q: Standard Kit: What comes in the Standard Kit?
A: The standard kit includes a standard 12 volt wall wart power supply with extension cord (which is used to reduce wear/tear on power cord, and can also be used to cool the temperature down), underbutter touch-up wax, muslin ABV bag, your choice in stems and the option to add a 2 pack of copper aromatherapy cups. The standard wall wart provides plenty of power and is sufficient for more than 90% of users' needs. If you feel that you would like more flexibility in voltage/temperature range, read about the VVPS options below. Please note that Classic Vapes (made before May 2013) are not compatible with Nylon Stems.
Q: Stems: What is the difference between stem choices?
A: We currently offer several different stem choices with new vape purchases: Direct Draw Glass (Thick or Regular Wall), 14mm GonG (Long or Short Glass on Glass), Nylon (Direct Draw), NonG (14mm or 18/19mm Nylon on Glass). You can view our full stem selection here or check out our YouTube video on stem differences.
The GonG and Direct Draw stems are all glass with stainless steel formed screens and fit over the center heat port tube. These give you a less restricted, smoother draw. The 14mm GonG stems have a tapered 14mm joint on one end for use with a water pipe, and the long one can also be used directly. The thick walled direct draw stem is more durable than the regular walled one, but it is heavier to hold. The Nylon and NonG stems have a stainless steel tip and stainless steel formed screen. These ones give you a more restricted, slightly hotter draw. The NonG stems are available in 14mm and 18/19mm tapered joints. The Stainless Lite stem is an all stainless steel stem with stainless formed screen. It also fits inside the heat port, so it has a similar draw to the Nylon and NonG stems. When ordering replacement screens, please read the product description to find out which screen size you need as these stems use two different screen sizes.
For new UD users, we recommend getting at least one glass type stem and one nylon or stainless type stem so that you can try them both and see what you like. We also have older style stems available for purchase if you wish to experiment. All stems are made, by intentional design, to fit loosely with the heater core's center tube. You will need to hold onto the stem while the vape is in a horizontal or upsidedown position to keep it from falling out. We make them this way, so that your stems should not get stuck or break, during the expansion and contraction that happens due to heating and cooling.
Q: What's the deal with heat preference and temperature control? What is a VVPS?
A: There is a natural variation between each individual heating element that goes into our vapes. This means that you could power two separate vapes with 12 volts of electricity, and one vape may produce more heat than the other. Some heating elements require a little more voltage to get them to the same heat level as others, and on the flip side, some vapes may run too hot on the same voltage. We strive to keep all of our vapes in the optimal vaping range, but there are many outside factors that can affect your vape experience, such as the moisture content of your herb, which type of stem you're using, grind and pack consistency, your ambient room temperature, draw speed, screen placement, personal preference, etc. The Preferred Heat Level option is geared toward experienced log vape users who know their preference, which is why it's an optional and subjective choice.
We also offer Temperature Control Options. Right now, we have some leftover stock of our (soon to be discontinued) LED voltage screen readout dimmers, as well as our new VVPS (variable voltage power supply). See our Temp Control Page for more information.
Q: What is Underbutter and how is it used?
A: You've probably been wondering what Underbutter is. Well, wonder no more! Underbutter is our version of wood conditioner, made with organic beeswax and oil. You can apply it to your vape whenever you want, and as often as you want, to keep the wood from drying out. We recommend warming up your piece and using a lint-free cloth such as t-shirt material to gently rub a little of the butter into the wood grain. Be careful not to get too much around the heat port or plug. If you do, no big deal - it will burn off with time. Check out our Underbutter video on YouTube.
Q: How can I get a custom piece?
A: Commissioned pieces are priced depending on type of wood and level of complexity. Check out this handy Custom Vape guide and then Contact us with the details of your idea so we can get started. Also, if you're just looking for a little customization, check out our Build to Order Vapes.

USE AND CARE
Q: How do I know when my stuff is all vaped out?
A: When the material has released the majority of its active ingredients you will no longer be able to draw vapor from it. The material will also change to a dark-golden-brown color. This material does have some active ingredients left and you can save it for baking and making poultices, etc. Be creative!
Q: Can I leave my vaporizer on 24/7?
A: Yes, you can leave your Underdog vaporizer on 24/7; however, please know that this will more quickly use up the lifespan of your vape. You can think of it like your vape has a certain number of working hours. If you turn your vape off when it is not in use, you will save more of those hours for later when you are actually using it. If you regularly use your vape during the same times each day, consider purchasing an inexpensive outlet timer that you can program to automatically turn on your vape to be ready for you when you want it.
Also, you can use a 12v LED dimmer switch or VVPS to put your vape in "standby mode" at a lower temperature when not in use. This will help your vape heat up faster, since it will be starting from warm instead of cold, and will lengthen your usable lifespan since it will be sitting by at a warm instead of hot temperature. The wood is one of the main components that affects lifespan, and all wood types will eventually deteriorate from the heat over time. So it's best to keep your hottest times for when you're using it. Take a look at our Temp Control page.
Q: How is the copper aromatherapy cup used?
A: Put a few drops of aromatherapy oil into the copper cup and place the cup on top of the heater port of your vape and let the vape heat up to release the scents. To make your oils last longer, put a small bit of beeswax into the cup with the oils. The added benefit is that when you are finished with a session and allow the oils to cool, they will become solid with the beeswax and are less likely to spill. Check out our YouTube video on how to use your Underdog for aromatherapy.
Q: How can I clean my stems and screens?
A: With proper preventative care, we find that screens can last indefinitely. To keep your screens clean, we recommend blowing out your ABV from the stem immediately after finishing a hit. If there is still a little gunk in the screen, take a dry hot hit through the empty screen and blow it out again. We have screens that have been going strong for years using this method.
Underdog stems (and screens) can be washed with isopropyl alcohol (ISO) or in the dishwasher with your silverware. To wash with ISO, we recommend using a small container, such as a plastic test tube with a cap, and putting a pinch of salt into the solution with the stem and gently shaking.
